"Percentage of" covers two of the most common percentage questions people ask. The first is finding a portion of a number — for example, what is 20% of 150? The second is finding what percentage one number represents of another — for example, 25 is what percentage of 200? Both are everyday calculations used in shopping, finance, cooking, and statistics.
Finding X% of Y:
Formula: Result = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Total
Finding what percentage X is of Y:
Formula: Percentage = (X ÷ Y) × 100

What is 25% of 200?
(25 ÷ 100) × 200 = 50
Example 2
What is 15% of 80?
(15 ÷ 100) × 80 = 12

50 is what percentage of 200?
(50 ÷ 200) × 100 = 25%

30 is what percentage of 120?
(30 ÷ 120) × 100 = 25%
What is the difference between the two modes?
The first mode answers "What is X% of Y?" — for example, what is 20% of 150 (answer: 30).
The second answers "X is what % of Y?" — for example, 30 is what percentage of 150 (answer: 20%).
They are the inverse of each other.
Can X be larger than Y in mode 2?
Yes. If X is larger than Y the result will be greater than 100%, which simply means X is
more than the whole — for example, 250 is 125% of 200.
What if Y is zero?
Division by zero is undefined. The calculator will alert you if you enter zero as the total or whole value.
How do I find 10% of something quickly?
Simply move the decimal point one place to the left. 10% of 450 is 45. For 5%, halve that result: 22.5.
