× 10^
Scientific notation expresses very large or very small numbers as a coefficient (between 1 and 10) multiplied by a power of 10. Example: 0.000045 = 4.5 × 10−5. It avoids writing lots of zeros and makes multiplication/division much easier.
What is E notation?
E notation is used in calculators and programming. "4.5E-5" means 4.5 × 10⁻⁵. It's the same as scientific notation, just written differently.
What is engineering notation?
Engineering notation restricts exponents to multiples of 3 (matching SI prefixes: kilo=10³, mega=10⁶, milli=10⁻³, micro=10⁻⁶ etc.), making it practical for electronics and engineering.
