How Much Should You Tip?

Tipping customs vary by country and type of service. In the UK, 10โ€“15% is standard for restaurants, with 20% considered generous. In the US, 15โ€“20% is the norm with 25%+ for exceptional service. For bar staff, rounding up or adding ยฃ1โ€“2 per round is common. For taxis, rounding up to the nearest pound or adding 10% is typical.

How to Calculate a Tip

  1. Multiply the bill amount by the tip percentage divided by 100
  2. Add the tip to the bill to get the total
  3. Divide the total by the number of people to get each person's share

Formula:

Tip = Bill ร— (Tip % รท 100)

Total = Bill + Tip

Per Person = Total รท Number of People

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Convention varies. In the UK there is no VAT debate as service is typically included or offered separately. In the US, tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is technically correct, but tipping on the total is more common and slightly more generous.

Is a service charge the same as a tip?
Not always. A service charge added by the venue goes to the business and may or may not be passed to staff. A tip paid directly to your server or in cash is more likely to go directly to them. Always check whether a service charge is already included before adding extra.

How do I split the bill if people ordered different amounts?
This calculator splits the total (including tip) evenly. For uneven splits, calculate each person's share of the food separately and add their proportional tip on top.
